The Ultimate Huel Recipes Compilation (100+ Huel hacks)

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]

Finding a good source of Huel recipes is not easy. Or is it?

The problem is that they are scattered in the forum and in the Huel blog posts. I have been collecting these Huel recipe ideas in one big compilation post. I have tried to organize them, by putting the smoothies together, those recipes that require baking one after the other… I have also tried to credit the original creator of the recipe and link it when appropriate.

Basics on How to Cook with Huel:

Here are a few ways to improve your Huel shakes:

  • Simple hacks: Not all require time. Choose any of the ingredients listed below and simply add it to your Huel (e.g. instant coffee, cacao powder, cinnamon, peanut butter, miso…).
  • Smoothies: Think of anything you would put in a smoothie, add your normal dosage of Huel (or one less scoop) and blend it in a blender. E.g. Tropical Huel (get mango, kiwi, papaya, pineapple; add to 2-3 scoops of U&U Huel; add 500ml of water and blend it).
  • Savoury Warm: Huel can be used to boost vegetable soups (take any low-calorie vegetable soup and add 2 scoops of U&U Huel when it is warm, not boiling). Or it can also be used for curries.
  • Sweet Warm: Huel works very well replacing flour in pancakes (both sweet and savoury) and waffles.
  • Baking: Similarly, you can replace flour with Huel in many muffins, cookies, cakes… recipes or even make bread with Huel.

5 Easy Hacks to Make Your Huel Taste Better in 5 Seconds

As mentioned, you don’t have to overcomplicate yourself. Making your Huel shake taste better can be quite easy. Here are 5 easy hacks to help you with the process, and if you don’t want the extra hassle, you can always check out our favorite Huel alternatives:

  1. Use a blender. A blender will massively improve the texture and taste of Huel. Heck, it will even make it easier to make simple Huel Smoothies!
  2. Milk and dairy-based alternatives. Add milk and make your Huel taste better instantly! Be aware that you will be adding some calories too, though.
  3. Too sweet? No problem. Use 50/50 with Unflavored Huel and reduce the sweetness levels of Huel shakes.
  4. 0 calorie syrups. On the other hand, if you think your Huel lacks flavour, why not use a 0 calorie syrup like MyProtein’s Flav Drops?
  5. Spice it up! Simple spices like cinnamon can rejuvenate your Huel shake! Alternatively, you can add a spoon of honey, or if you are using a blender add some frozen berries!

Tip! The Huel Spice Rack. Identify some of the combinations you like the most (this works best with dry powders) pre-mix them (e.g. instant coffee and cocoa powder, ginger and allspice, curry powder with blackpepper) and have them in a way where you just need to add them to your Huel (pre-measured).

Zero Syrups

  • 0 calories, 0 fat, 0 carbs.
  • 6 flavours: Blueberry, Cherry, Honey, Choc Fudge, Golden Syrup, and Maple Syrup.
  • Easiest way to make your Huel taste better.
  • Add one drop in your Huel and completely change the taste.

Cold Huel

Huel losses part of its graininess when you store it in the fridge overnight. Thus, any smoothies or hacks that involve shaking Huel can be kept overnight for a smoother mix.

Cold Huel can also be achieved by adding some chilled water or ice cubes to the mix. A very interesting way to add the ice is by putting them on the grid and letting them slowly melt (see image below).

Cold Huel Hack

Warm Huel

When you warm up Huel you might end up losing some of its nutrients (similar to overcooking vegetables). Proteins tend to denature at around 70C (158F) and it might cause clumps.

Also if you pour a hot drink into the shaker and close the lid, the steam will up the pressure in the shaker, creating a Huel bomb. You will end up with Huel all over, trust me.

Thus, when adding heated liquids to Huel I suggest letting them cool a little bit first.

Huel Recipes

Which Huel Is Best for…?

Huel U&U is great for cooking since it allows you to start from a neutral base and not have any influence in the final flavour (like flour).

Huel Vanilla and Original are great for smoothies and sweet recipes, since they add a little bit of sweetness and vanilla essence. They are also the best if you just want to add a simple flavour option (not complex cooking).

Huel Coffee can be great for smoothies that would do well with the coffee flavour (like Banoffee or Peanut Butter) or a sweet coffee muffin or pancake.

Huel Berry is a great starter for any mix containing fruits, summer fruits, tropical fruits and berries. This is also true with Huel Banana, although, it can be a great when you add some peanut butter, and one espresso shot.

On the other hand, Huel Chocolate is great to add to coffee based, caramel based or similar sweet shakes to boost your mornings.

Mint Chocolate Huel is a little bit more situational and not the greatest premix for recipes.

Simple Ingredients to Make Your Huel Shake Taste Great

This is a quick list of some of the ingredients you can just add on to your Huel shake without any preparations. It will change the shake with minimal effort.

Sweet

Take into account that you will add 64kcal, all from sugar 17g. Mix it with warm milk or warm water for easier mixing.[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Peanut Butter” tab_id=”1539672431954-99046824-796e”][vc_column_text]Peanut butter is quite heavy in calories and even if it will give a delicious touch to your Huel shake, use it in moderation. Add about one tbsp (16g, 94kcal) or two (188kcal) and use a blender for better mixing, if you can.

Peanut Butter Nutrition (smooth)
Cocoa Powder Nutrition
Nesquick Nutrition

Peanut butter is great if you want to put some weight on or you are looking to catch up with calories.[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Cocoa powder” tab_id=”1539672839025-c4a76b91-a983″][vc_column_text]Cocoa powder is a great way to add some chocolatty flavour without being overpowered by sugars. Two tbsp (10.8g) or three will give you less than 50kcal and can be enough to personalize your Huel. You can always add some cinnamon or other twist to it, too.[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Nesquick or any other instant chocolate powder” tab_id=”1539673032929-6b50242b-466f”][vc_column_text]Instant chocolate powders are a little stronger and sweeter than cocoa powder. This is both good and bad, since it means they will be quite heavy in sugars. You can add two to three tbsp of Nesquick mixed in some warm (not boiling) water or milk and then add it to your U&U or Vanilla Huel for a special winter breakfast.[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Sugar, brown sugar or other type of sugar.” tab_id=”1539673312367-60bef155-8ac6″][vc_column_text]Just like adding sugar to your coffee or tea, you can add sugar to your U&U (the other flavours are fairly sweet already) or any educolorant you want (for zero calories).

Sugar Nutrition

Two tbsp of sugar should be enough to make the Huel shake sweet, adding 32kcal (8.4g of sugar). [/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Maple syrup, golden syrup or caramel syrup.” tab_id=”1539676370292-c7a76370-a893″][vc_column_text]These are ways to add sweetness to your Huel with a little bit of personality. They work great with the coffee flavour (caramel coffee Huel) or the U&U. Unfortunately, I think adding these to the Vanilla versions might make them to sweet, and I would not add it to the Huel Berry.

Maple Syrup Nutrition

The problem with the syrups is that they will mostly just add sugar and a fair bit of calories.[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Ice cream” tab_id=”1539673652659-7343a30f-cbb2″][vc_column_text]This is one of the funnest ways to boost your Huel shake. It will be fairly calorie dense, mostly from carbohydrates (sugars) and fats; but it will change the texture, the temperature and the taste of your Huel.

Ben&Jerry's Chocolate Brownie Nutrition

Take your favourite ice cream, such as, simple Vanilla, Ben&Jerry’s Chocolate Brownie, or a fruity ice cream, add a couple of spoons to your Huel, add water like normal and use a blender for best results. [/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][/vc_tta_accordion]

Fruits

[vc_tta_accordion active_section=”0″ collapsible_all=”true”][vc_tta_section title=”Banana” tab_id=”1539673982723-cbc71c68-79f5″][vc_column_text]Adding a banana is one one of the most popular Huel hacks. Peel it, dice it and add it. Ideally, you would use a blender. If you do not have one, you can either mash it in a bowl before adding it or you can chop it in really small pieces for a chunky shake ( you will have to remove the grid).

1 medium sized banana will be around 105kcal mostly from sugars (14g) and complex carbohydrates. Bananas will also boost your potassium levels and vitamin levels in the shake.

Tip! Add a couple of tbsp of instant coffee (or already prepared coffee) for a banoffee shake or add some cocoa powder of an extra twist.

Banana Nutrition

[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Kiwi” tab_id=”1539673983240-3f427d14-3db9″][vc_column_text]Kiwis are great fruits for smoothies. They add a little bit of punch and a lovely flavour, and usually combine very well with other fruits, such as banana.

Kiwi Nutrition

I would mash the kiwis prior to adding to the shake. Add a couple for extra flavour. Kiwi’s go great with Huel Berry and Huel U&U.[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Berries (blueberries, raspberries, blackberries…)” tab_id=”1539673983708-4e2239ae-ab9e”][vc_column_text]Berries are super popular add-ons in smoothies, desserts or even breakfast porridge. They have tons of micronutrients, some phytonutrients and add a lot of extra without adding many calories.

Berries Nutrition

Get some frozen berries (or fresh), add around one cup (148g, 85kcal) and blend them in a blender (or use hand-blender). Berries work particularly well in ice-cold shakes.[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Strawberries” tab_id=”1539673984174-dc360434-7f72″][vc_column_text]Strawberries are great addition to any smoothie or shake. You will need quite a few finely chopped. I would recommend adding them to the U&U flavour or to the berry flavoured Huel. I do not think they go very well with the vanilla taste.

Strawberries Nutrition
Apple Nutrition

For an extra spin, blend some strawberries with milk and ice and add them to 3 scoops of U&U Huel.[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Apple” tab_id=”1539673984628-3c29f79b-9bab”][vc_column_text]Apples are ubiquitous in our markets. There are many varieties, some more sour some sweeter. Choose your favourite apple, chop it finelly and add it to your U&U Huel. You can always add cinnamon (apple pie!) or a little bit of sugar for extra sweetness. Or if you feel adventurous, cook the apples (boil or oven) with sugar and then add to your Huel![/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Peach” tab_id=”1539673985154-fe5c2f23-06c3″][vc_column_text]Peaches are another fruit you can have use them fresh (they need to be tender) or in syrup or frozen. Depending your mood, the weather and the temperature you want your Huel, add the one that suits the most. Huel Berries and Huel U&U are the best powder’s to mix peaches with. The peaches in syrup will be richer in calories.

Vegetables

[vc_tta_accordion active_section=”0″ collapsible_all=”true”][vc_tta_section title=”Kale” tab_id=”1539677993529-2af296b4-b78a”][vc_column_text]Kale is a low calorie, super nutrient rich vegetable. Great to mix with other vegetables, like spinach, or fruits (kiwi), perhaps a little weak to mix it with Huel on its own. I would recommend adding some kale to Huel U&U and blend it properly (do not use just the shaker). You could also boil it quickly to soften it and use the broth (although this will give a very strong taste to the shake).

Kale Nutrition
100g of kale is a lot of kale.

[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Spinach” tab_id=”1539677993734-9623e4aa-09b1″][vc_column_text]Spinach is another super vegetable, nutrient rich and not very calorie dense at all. It is a great way to add extra nutrients while not adding almost any calories. Spinach also works best when combined to other vegetables or fruits (kale, kiwi, carrots, banana).

You can add them fresh and blend it once you have add the water and the Huel (U&U or Vanilla/Original) or boil them a little to soften them.

Spinach Nutrition
Again, 100g of spinach is a lot of spinach.
Carrot Nutrition
Beetroot Nutrition
Broccoli Nutrition

[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Carrots” tab_id=”1539677993915-a8097526-82ab”][vc_column_text]Carrots are great source of vitamins and bring extra flavours to any smoothie or shake. Once again, carrots work great in combination with other vegetables. I would recommend boiling them before adding to Huel U&U to soften them and make it easier to blend. Adding things like curry powder or other vegetables with warm water will make the Huel shakes very soup like (perfect for winter).[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Beetroot” tab_id=”1539677994061-c9807dc1-89ec”][vc_column_text]Adding beetroots on its own will not make a great Huel shake, but if you add some ginger, celery, spinach, mix them together and then add to your U&U Huel; you will get an awesome Huel vegetable smoothie.[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Brocolli” tab_id=”1539677994195-b2f99f74-ce2f”][vc_column_text]Broccolis work well if you want a warm Huel. You goal should be to prepare a broccoli soup with cream or milk and then add Huel to it for the extra nutritional power. Care when adding heated liquids to Huel. [/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][/vc_tta_accordion][vc_column_text]Spinach and kale are the kings of many green smoothies because they can be used without cooking, they bring little calories and tons of nutrition. However, many other vegetables can be used, especially if you soften them before by boiling (steaming) them.

Some of the examples include:

  • Courgette, pumpkin, butternut squash, cucumber
  • Coliflower
  • Asparagus
  • Tomato

Vegetables will be especially helpful to make warm Huel variations. Make them into vegetables soups (tomato soup, broccoli and coliflower soup, carrot and coriander soup, butternut squash), which tend to be low in calories and then add it to your Huel U&U. You can even buy the soups in the supermarkets and then mix them with Huel and water.[/vc_column_text]

Other Flavourings

[vc_tta_accordion active_section=”0″ collapsible_all=”true”][vc_tta_section title=”Coffee” tab_id=”1539680659365-6232cd1e-7664″][vc_column_text]Perhaps the most universal way to change any meal replacement. Just adding instant coffee or already brewed coffee changes the taste and the content (adds caffeine) of your Huel. Personally, I am a big fan of adding it to the Original or Vanilla flavours, since it becomes a great vanilla flavoured coffee. Otherwise, adding creamers, syrups, a tiny little bit of sugar, or flavourings will do wonders.

Add 50/50 milk water combination together with the coffee to get a more latte like mix (the more milk the better, but will also add extra calories).

Ultra Caffeinated Huel
Double Coffee Huel.

Coffee is also great because it adds no calories to the mix.[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Tea” tab_id=”1539680659524-5b111a01-b63d”][vc_column_text]Tea is a little trickier to add than coffee. The best way to do so is to make an infusion (of your favourite tea with water and/or with milk), let it cool down add it to your Huel in the evening and leave it in the fridge overnight so your Vanilla Huel (or U&U) will have time to take the aroma. Your standard preference when preparing your tea (milk, creamer, sugar, syrup) can also be applied when preparing it with Huel.

Plus, tea will add no calories to your Huel. You can consume it warm or ice cold (add ice cubes or leave it in the freezer for 15min).

[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Milk (dairy, almond, rice, coconut, soy)” tab_id=”1539680659676-ca5539d5-2a55″][vc_column_text]Together with coffee, adding different types of milk is the easiest way to customize your Huel. Standard, almond, coconut, hazelnut, soy, rice… there are so many in the market that is hard to keep up. Furthermore, milk will go great with any Huel, you can customize your calories by either choosing less fatty/sugary milks or having Huel with different types of water/milk mixes.

I personally find that 30 milk 70 water is usually enough to hint milky flavour, 50/50 is a very good mix usually and 100/0 will make it thicker and milkier (perfect for when you are looking to add extra calories).

On top of this, milk will go very well with any sweet addition to the shake.[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Huel Flavour Boosts” tab_id=”1539680659813-2229bca1-86a9″][vc_column_text]Another simple way to customize your Huel shake is adding the flavour boost that you like the most. The Vanilla, Original, Coffee and U&U are the best base flavours to add upon. Depending the flavour boost you choose, the best fitted base Huel will change (this is also very subjective).

Some ideas for combinations:

[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Other Flavour Boosts” tab_id=”1539680659950-0c5b7c4b-59bb”][vc_column_text]However, Huel flavour boosts are not the only flavourings in the market; in fact, there are many other calorie-less flavourings (MyProtein Flav Drops, Capella Food flavourings).

Some of my favourites include:

  • MyProtein Vanilla flav drop (great to add to the Coffee Huel).
  • MyProtein Toffee flav drop (adds sweetness, great for Original and Coffee Huel).
  • Other flav drops.
  • Coffee creamers (hazelnut flavour).

[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][/vc_tta_accordion][vc_column_text]Adding spices is perhaps the most universal way to change any dish or food. Similarly, you can change the scope of your Huel shake by adding tiny amounts of spices (nutmeg, cinnamon, ginger…). A lot of the times, it will not even require any preparation, but just throwing a little bit on top of your Vanilla Huel or your coffee Huel.

Examples:

  • Cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger. Great to add to Vanilla, Coffee or U&U.
  • Black pepper, onion powder, garlic powder, peppers, chives, thyme, basil, coriander, rosemary, parsley, oregano, wasabi, miso… Often better in a mix of vegetables and other ingredients.

Put some of your favourite spice (or powder flavouring) combinations with your preferred dosage of Huel. For instance, Huel Coffee (2 scoops) with cocoa powder (1tbsp) or Huel Vanilla (2 scoops) with cinnamon. Put these mixes in unlabeled cups and have them during the week randomly.

Ideas for 7 meal Huelette:

  • Coffee with cocoa powder.
  • U&U with curry powder.
  • Vanilla with cinnamon.
  • Original with matcha tea flavour system.
  • Original with instant coffee, cinnamon and cocoa powder.
  • Vanilla with grated ginger and allspice.
  • Berry with strawberry flavour boost.

Huel Black Recipes

A quick note on Huel Black recipes and Huel hacks in general. Both Huel Powder and Huel Black can work in most recipes listed below interchangeably.

Even though, Huel Original will be better to bake with, for Huel smoothie recipes both Huel Powder and Black will be the same.

For instance, one of my favourite Huel Recipes is:

  • 2xScoops of Huel
  • 1x Banana
  • 1 spoon of PB
  • 1 tablespoon of cinnamon (optional)
  • 250ml of oat milk and 250ml of water

This recipe works with Huel Powder Vanilla, but also surprisingly with Huel Black Salted Caramel.

105. (Halloween savoury) Jack Skellington Ricotta Olive Tarts – by Sarah Menanix

Huel Jack Skellington
Picture from snixykitchen.com

Ingredients

Crust:

  • 3/4 cup of Huel U&U.
  • 1/3 cup of flour (oat, millet or more Huel).
  • 3 tbsp of tapioca starch.
  • A pinch of salt.
  • 8 tbsp of cold butter.
  • 5-7tbsp of ice cold watter.

For the filling:

  • 1 can of black olives.
  • 3-4 tbsp of sun dried tomatoes packed in oil.
  • 2-3 teaspoons fresh thyme leaves
  • 3 tbsp of grated parmesan cheese.
  • 1½ cups ricotta cheese.
  • ¼ cup + 2 tablespoons greek yogurt.
  • 3 egg whites.
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced.
  • A pinch of salt.

Method:

The crust:

  1. Mix Huel with the flour and the tapioca starch. Add the salt, too.
  2. Chop the butter into small pieces, add it to the mix and with the hands gently mix.
  3. Add the water (one tbsp at the time) and keep mixing until you can pinch the dough.
  4. Divide into smaller pieces and roll them to make the tarts. Keep them in the fridge for 30minutes or so.
  5. Roll the disk even further to make it 1 inch bigger than the tart pan (all around the circumference). Do this in floured surface or parchment paper to avoid sticking to the surface.
  6. Place all the rolled dough in the tart pans.

The filling:

  1. Cut 6 olives into thin slices (for the mouth). Also, cut 12-14 ovals to make the nose.
  2. Chop 3-4 tablespoons of the black olives and divide them among each tart.
  3. Place 3-5 strips of julienned sun-dried tomatoes on top of each tart.
  4. Sprinkle about ¼ teaspoon of fresh thyme leaves onto each tart, and divide & sprinkle the parmesan cheese among the tarts.
  5. Bake the tarts for 12 minutes, until the crust is lightly cooked.
  6. Meanwhile, whisk together the ricotta, greek yogurt, egg whites, garlic, and salt.
  7. Once the tarts come out of the oven, divide the ricotta filling among each tart, filling each one to the top.
  8. Place two whole black olives for the eyes and two small olive ovals for the nose onto each tart. Delicately create a criss-cross mouth (as pictured) using the paper thin olive strips. Tip: I used chopsticks to make it easier to place the olives.
  9. Bake each tart for 20-25 minutes, or until the ricotta filling is set. Depending on the size of your mini tart pans, start checking for doneness around 15 minutes. Serve warm.
  10. To reheat, bake on 400F (200C) for 7 minutes.

Huel Hot & Savory Recipes

Let me preface this section by stating the obvious. Huel Hot and Savory recipes will mostly be around tweaking the existing flavours.

Because Huel H&S products already have distinct flavours, this will be about making Huel Hot and Savory better, mostly.

For instance, I find Huel Hot and Savory Tomato & Herbs to be incredibly bland. That’s why I love adding some Tabasco or other spice to it.

109. Huel Hot & Savory Tomato with Parmesan Cheese

Ingredients

  • 1 serving of Huel H&S Tomato.
  • 1 spoon of virgin extra olive oil.
  • 1 spoon of parmesan cheese.
  • Fresh basil (optional).
  • Hot sauce (optional).

Method:

  1. Prepare your Huel H&S following instructions.
  2. Grate some parmesan cheese and add it to your Huel H&S while its resting.
  3. Serve it into a bowl and add the spoon of olive oil on top with the basil.
  4. If you are feeling fancy, you can add some nuts or crutons for some crunchiness.

110. (H&S hack) Huel H&S Add-Ons

You can add any of the following to Huel Hot and Savory:

  • Hot Sauces (Chipotle, Tabasco).
  • A spoon of fresh yogurt.
  • Minced garlic.
  • Olive oil.
  • Cheese.
  • Coconut milk.
  • Salt.
  • Lemon.
